Aught strives to provide a forum for poetry outside the academic verse mainstream. This is an admittedly vague position, which we'll compound with the cliche: "We know what we like." Your own term du jour might include "avant-garde," "language oriented," "experimental," "progressive," or, dare we say, "postmodern."

Submission Guidelines
We generally hate guidelines on what kinds of work are appropriate, but the large number of submissions by poets who clearly have not even looked at an issue of Aught now necessitates it. Aught is most interested in publishing poetry and prose poems with innovative language and imagery, as well as "language-oriented" formal experimentation. Please do not submit traditional formal poems, traditional confessional free verse, or "inspirational" poetry; there are many other webzines appropriate for those genres of work. In general, it is probably not a good idea to send us work unless you have more than a passing acquaintance with postmodernism and are very familiar with -- and influenced by -- such schools of poetry as the New York School (Ashbery, O'Hara, Mayer), the Black Mountain Poets (early Levertov, Olson, Creeley), and Language Poetry (Silliman, Hejinian, Coolidge, Howe). Submit ASCII text or RTF word processing format files to rgh3@cornell.edu. We try to respond within two months to submissions, but bear with us if work and life pressures cause delays. Note that Aught cannot pay contributors at this time.
